Does anyone in the Greenville, NC area have a BMW Code reader they'd be willing to lend to a fellow Oppo in need?

If it's OBDII you shouldn't need a BMW-specific reader. Go to Autozone and have one of the employees read your codes.

the problem is the car doesn't run, so getting it to an AZ is unpossible

Can YOU get to Autozone et al?
$50 will get you a cheap code reader.

Do you use the peake tool or a generic OBDII?

If you've got a smartphone, you can get an OBDII bluetooth scanner for less than $15 off of Amazon. There's a couple good code reader apps out there that you can download to your phone for a few bucks. I use the Torque app on my Android phone and it works like a dream.

I just bought a Bluetooth obd ii reader for like $17 on Amazon today for my e36. If it's not running, that can still be there (your house) by the end of the week (or sooner if you expedite). Simple app on your phone, and you have code reader plus live data reader/logging. Might get there before a fellow opponaut has time to come over.
Would have saved me a $100 diagnostic if I'd bought this a few weeks ago...

the BMW specific tool is much better and won't just give you general codes... more often than not, it's much better than a generic OBD2 reader
